You do indeed remember correctly. C-J I believe it was.
The corp I was in at the time was given a station 3 jumps away from there. We were still small and had been looking for 0.0 access, so the opportunity was too good to pass up. Little did we know that the station we had was taken from RA just a week before, and that we were frontline cannon fodder.
For the next month, we participated in the attempt to finish off RA. That culminated in the biggest Cap battle Eve had seen at the time. LV in particular had 40+ Capitals and the battle started.
The first RA POS attacked was contested with everything RA could throw at the dreads. Lag was bad, so bad that all non-caps and non-bs were ordered out of the system. The fight saw RA warping Capitals right into the battle, with little regard for the odds. That POS fell at a cost of 5 Dreads, most lost when they disconnected and were probed out by waiting RA ships.
I was sitting at a POS in my Carrier repairing ships returning from the fight. It was the only thing I could do, as the various Egos involved were not inviting anyone who was not in their own alliance. (That's one of the major problems with mixed ops, and a problem that Bob/RA don't have BTW.)
It was a very impressive sight to see when 40+ LV Capitals warped back to the POS after reinforcing the first RA POS. At that time, I felt very good about our fleet/allies. I continued fixing ships and trying in vain to get an invite.
Then something amazing happened: On cue, all 40 LV Caps jumped out. Seems the battle was 'too laggy' and the losses 'too much' so LV was going home. I knew at that point that RA would not be defeated. Our corp left the alliance within a week.
It wasn't because of cheats, or superior numbers or even superior tactics. RA won because they had the will to take the losses, and LV did not.
In the time since then, I continue to see RA exhibit the total dedication they showed that day. LV's attempt to minimize losses just meant that they died on another day.
All that was 2+ years ago. I believe that lesson is still the defining moment of an alliance: When you're willing to risk everything, you can win. When you're constantly looking to hold back 'just in case', you've already lost.
So any question of 'Superpowers' is not just a numerical count of the number of This or That ship. The true Superpower will be the one who is willing to take the losses in order to accomplish the task at hand. RA did it then, Bob did it recently. Tri looked the monster in the face and decided to bail instead of commit. We'll see which Power rises to the occasion when it next presents itself.
